Book description:

The novel opens on a Barbados sugar plantation, where young Washington Black knows nothing but gut wrenching cruelty. At the tender age of eleven, he has already made the decision to join Big Kit, whom he loved and feared, in welcoming their own deaths to go to their homeland. However, plans are set aside when he is chosen to be a manservant to the master's eccentric brother. Wash is terrified of the cruelties he is certain await him. But Christopher Wilde, or "Titch," is a naturalist, explorer, scientist, inventor, and an abolitionist. He teaches Wash to read, involving him in experiments and tapping into his artistic creativity. But tragedy soon strikes, and both Wash and Titch abandon all they know to save Wash's life.
