Dale Slongwhite Book Signing - Sunday, August 17, 2014
Join us Sunday, August 17th from 1pm - 3pm as Dale signs copies of her book Fed Up: The High Costs of Cheap Food.
In Fed Up: The High Costs of Cheap Food, author Dale Slongwhite has taken a well-known topic to many central Floridians -- the pollution of Lake Apopka -- and told the story in a new and spell-binding manner -- through the voices of eleven African American former farmworkers who planted and harvested crops on the farms beside the lake.
You may have heard of the closing of several dozen thriving farms due to pollution of the lake; or the thousand birds that died on the lake's shore in one migrating season; or the rapid decline of the once-prized large-mouth bass; or the sexual anomalies of the alligators.
There is a gap, however, in the historical narrative -- whatever happened to the people who suffered the same assault as the land, the lake, the birds, the fish, and the alligators? Fed Up brings to the reader the voices of the people who have been voiceless. . .until now.
In lyrical language through stories that are at the same time heart-wrenching and heart-warming, you will hear about crawling down seemingly-endless rows in scorching heat and driving rain while being sprayed by crop dusting planes; sicknesses that annihilated whole families; dreams of procuring an education and a better life; Sunday afternoon family get-togethers; exploitation and abuse; pride, thankfulness, and faith.
"Poignant, gut-wrenching and real, this book should be required reading for everyone who eats."
Barry Estabrook, author of Tomatoland: How Modern Industrial Agriculture Destroyed Our Most Alluring Fruit.
"Testimony like this belongs in the Federal Register."
